What is the Laurelhurst Club all about?

It is a private club made up of couples who like to dance and to encourage youth and adults to have fun dancing.

What kind of dance?

Primarily Ballroom dancing which includes Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha-cha, Two Step, Salsa and more.

How good do I have to be?

You just have to enjoy dance. Our members' abilities vary widely, but everyone supports each other in a fun environment.

How many dances are there each year?

Traditionally, there have been about 18, all to live music, but the decision each year is up to the Board of Directors.

What does it cost?

This year, September 2007 through August 2008, was just $285.00 for a couple. Next year, September 2008 through August 2008 will probably be a little more, but certainly within that price range.

What if I am not married?

Many of our dance couples are just that: couples who have gotten together to dance, married or not. We have found it works best if all members have a dance partner, though of course, the members are free to dance with each other and with their guests. Further, two or three times each dance there are mixers where switching partners is required for those on the dance floor.

What are members asked to do?

Besides paying the dues, they are asked to co-host with another couple one dance per year. This entails helping with the decorations and refreshments, the set-up and clean-up.

Are there dance classes?

We currently sponsor adult classes on Monday night, open to the public, but aimed at encouraging new members and providing a chance for existing members to sharpen their skills. We are also working on providing classes in BAllroom Dance and Etiquette for grade school children and could use your help if that is an interest fo yours.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, each dance has a reccommended dress. This coming year, roughly one-third will be formal, one-third will be called "tie optional", and one-third "dress casual", meaning just no jeans, tennis shoes or t-shirts.

Does the club own the building?

Yes, since 1912, and the club has been aneighborhood landmark ever since. If you have an interest in history or building maintenance, we could use your skills.

How do I join?

Fill out an application, obtainable from any Board Member, tender a check for $150.00 to be credited against next year's dues, and if the Board approves you, you are in.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Club is organized under an elected Board of Directors and is supported by annual dues and club building rentals for outside events and meetings.

Dances start with a short social gathering before the music begins. Live bands of well-known musicians make each dance a special occasion. The spacious hardwood floor on the ground level is a treat for any ballroom dancer. The carpeted lounge area with large fireplace is a cozy place to relax and listen to the music, and the lounge upstairs has a bar as well as an area for socializing. The Laurelhurst Club is a smoke free facility.
